Prompt: # 116
Summary: Not even his own fame and power are enough to get the Wizengamot to pass laws protecting Muggleborn and orphaned children, so Harry swallows his pride and goes to Draco Malfoy, who can teach him how to convince the prejudiced old bastards to listen to him. And Malfoy hasn’t even named a price. Which…concerns Harry, but he’s found a cause worth living for. And maybe someone, too.
Warnings: Angst, discussions of canonical child abuse, brief violence
Word Count: 27.500
Author’s Notes: This was written for DarkBloodWolf13’s prompt of Draco helps Harry navigate pureblood society in order to influence their society from the inside out, and, as asked, includes Draco learning about Harry’s childhood. The title comes from the following quote by Henry Codman Potter (a coincidence, but a pleasing one):“If there be no nobility of descent in a nation, it is all the more indispensable that there should be nobility of ascent; a character in them that bear rule, so fine and high and pure, that as men come within the circle of its influence, they involuntarily pay homage to that which is the one pre-eminent distinction—the royalty of virtue.” My thanks to my betas Karen and Linda, and to DarkBloodWolf13 for such an awesome prompt! I hope you like the fic.
